Steps to access home care, respite care, or aged care
Published - 2nd October 2025
Navigating the aged care system in Australia can feel overwhelming, particularly when you or a loved one are facing the need for extra support. There are specific steps that must be completed before home care, respite care, or aged care can begin, and understanding this process makes it far easier to plan with confidence. At any point in this journey, Astute Care can step in to guide and support you or even act on your behalf if you needed us to - making the process simpler, less stressful, and tailored to your needs.
Step 1. Contact ‘My Aged Care’
The first step is to call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or visit the website (www.myagedcare.gov.au). They are the government entry point for aged care services and will ask questions about your health, daily activities, and support needs.
Step 2. Register and create a client record
During your first contact with My Aged Care, your client record will be created. This includes personal details, medical history, current support, and other relevant information.
Step 3. Book an assessment
Based on your needs, My Aged Care will refer you for an assessment. There are two main types:
• Entry-level support, such as help at home through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)
• Aged Care Assessment Team: For higher-level needs, including Home Care Packages, respite, and permanent residential aged care.
Step 4. Receive your assessment outcome
After your assessment, you will receive a letter outlining the services you are eligible for. This will include the level of support approved and the types of care you can access.
This process can often feel overwhelming for families - from understanding assessments, to comparing providers, to managing paperwork and government funding. Astute Care supports clients through every step of this journey. We assist with preparing for assessments, explaining what to expect, and ensuring the information provided reflects your real needs.
Once an assessment outcome is received, Astute Care helps interpret the results, identify suitable providers, and guide you through the decision-making process. We work with you to compare options, explain fees and inclusions, and liaise with providers on your behalf if you wish. When it comes time to enter into agreements, we ensure you understand the terms, your rights, and your responsibilities. In this way, Astute Care acts as a trusted partner - taking the stress out of navigating the aged care system and ensuring that families feel supported, informed, and confident in the choices they make.
Step 5. Research and choose providers
With your assessment approval, you can begin researching service providers in your area. You can search on the My Aged Care website or ask for recommendations. Consider factors like location, services offered, cost, and availability.
Step 6. Arrange services and agreements
Once you select a provider, you will enter into a service agreement or home care agreement with them. This sets out the services to be delivered, costs, and responsibilities.
Step 7. Access care and ongoing reviews
When your services begin, your care plan will be tailored to your needs. Over time, your needs may change, so regular reviews and adjustments can be made to ensure your care remains appropriate.
